Many visitors take great pleasure in getting to know our dogs and I must admit they do look cute!
Meet Patch! Pictured right as a puppy with his brother Fly and left as a mature, serious sheepdog. Patch is a huge favourite with our guests. He is the most friendliest dog in the world and just adores children. Last year we had a little girl aged 2 1/2 years staying in High Arnside Cottage. She refused to go anywhere out of the sight of Patch and spent two very happy weeks throwing plastic toys for him. In the end her parents asked if they could take Patch on walks with them, so that they could get off the farm! We also have three other sheepdogs - Bob, Mist and Tip. This little pack are the real workers, who help Martin gather the sheep off the fells. Sometimes I help, but the majority of the time I manage to be busy elsewhere. Bob is top dog and would dearly love to be able to drive the quad to save his legs, like the farmer does! Tip is the daughter of Bob and Meg (now sadly no longer with us) and although she's only young, she is fast becoming an important member of the team. Watch out Bob!
Patch, Tip & Mist Tip Bob Freddie is a Jack Russell and a real character and belongs to our daughter, Ellie.. He is very spoilt and loved my us all! However, Socks and Tiger aren't so sure.
A new addition (March 08) is Jill the new collie. She arrived on Good Friday aged 8 weeks old in a blizzard. Despite pleas from myself and the children Martin refused to call her Flake (as in Snow flake) opting for a good sheep dog name Jill instead. We will try to get a photo of her on soon, but she is quite hard to photograph because she is always tearing around. Oh, yes we also have two cats! Sisters, Socks and Tiger. Socks is the real farm cat - always checking out what's going on while Tiger spends as much time as possible sleeping! Unfortunately because Tiger is so busy I haven't any photos of her!
Besides all the dogs, cats, sheep and cows the views are quite amazing too, which visitors also enjoy.

A frosty scene taken above the farm on a walk heading towards Arnside Intake.
Devastation this time! We had a fearful storm in January 2005. Hundreds of trees came down including about five on our drive. We were without electricity for 7 days and it took 3 weeks for the telephone to get back up and running. Star guests, Mark and Jude, helped clear a way through the debris, but continued with their holiday despite the conditions and lack of electricity.
Anyone concerned about our drive should only really worry if they are driving a wagon piled high with straw! Malcolm (very brave man) found this delivery a bit tight, but still managed to smile afterwards. Unlike the rest of us who had to unload the bales into the barn! |
