Things to do: High Arnside Farm is excellently situated for exploring the Lake District either by car or on foot. Also available is fly fishing on the tarn situated on the farm.
There are plenty of good pubs in the area. The Britannia Inn (2 miles) at Elterwater (see pic) and the Drunken Duck at Outgate (4 miles by car or 2 1/2 by foot) are big favourites.
Coniston has the Ruskin Museum and, of course, Brantwood - the home of John Ruskin himself. Hawkshead, a quaint black and white village with cobbled streets, is another favourite village amongst our guests. Some choose to walk through the forest, Iron Keld and over the "mountain track" passing Tarn Hows on their way. While others prefer to drive. Either way, most stop off at the Drunken Duck for refreshments sometime during their excursion! Ambleside and Bowness offer good shopping and a wide variety of eating places. Both villages have cinemas. Zefferillis in Ambleside is a big favourite with both the locals and visitors both as an excellent pizza/vegetarian restaurant and as a cinema with three screens. The meal deals come highly recommended where you can have cinema seats and a 2 course meal for around £15 - booking is essential. There are many places where you can hire mountain bikes, water sports are also available on Coniston Water and Windermere. Our children, William and Ellie delight in showing our guests the farm animals with feeding the lambs during the early summer. Whilst Martin and I are working hard shearing the sheep, the children love to bounce on the filled wool bags and this is a facility not many can boast to have! For those wet days, we also have passes to the Langdale Leisure Club. Facilities include swimming pool, gym, squash court, tennis court and the usual sauna rooms. Our son, William, makes bread and rolls to order. |
